Blue Community Schools: Turning Water Learning into Action

At USNN, our Nature Through Our Senses project is all about helping young people discover the magic of the natural world. And what could be more magical and essential than water? Every sip we drink, every splash in the river, every storm that rolls across our skies reminds us that water is life.

That’s why we’re so excited about the Blue Community Schools program—a creative, inspiring way to bring water education to life for students and teachers. It’s not just a school activity or a textbook chapter. It’s a journey that helps kids see water as something worth protecting, celebrating, and standing up for.

Why Blue Community Schools are Making Waves

Since the program launched last year, it’s already spread across borders—from Peru to Ontario—and dozens of other schools are working toward certification. Each one is joining a global movement that treats water as more than just a resource. It’s a human right. A shared responsibility. A bond that connects us all.

What Makes it So Fun (and Easy!)

Here’s the best part: becoming a Blue Community School isn’t complicated. The program is packed with ready-to-use resources that teachers can pick up and run with:

Virtual Presentation – A short, inspiring video featuring Maude Barlow, one of Canada’s most passionate water defenders.
PowerPoint Presentation – A slideshow ready to share with students, staff, or the whole community to spark action.
Blue Community Schools Guide – A step-by-step roadmap full of activities, ideas, and real examples to help schools make their Blue Community vision a reality.

Whether you’re a teacher looking for curriculum-aligned lessons, a parent who wants your child’s school to dive deeper into sustainability, or a student who’s ready to lead change, these tools make it simple, exciting, and fun to get started.

Why Kids Love It

Because this isn’t just learning, it’s doing. Kids get to explore local water issues, create projects, and connect with others around the world. It’s hands-on, engaging, and gives students the chance to see themselves as water protectors. That sense of pride and ownership is what makes the program so powerful.

Be Part of the Ripple Effect

At USNN, we love seeing programs like Blue Community Schools grow because they echo what we believe: real change starts with small, joyful actions that ripple outward. Water connects us all, and teaching the next generation to care for it is one of the most important gifts we can give.

So here’s our invitation: check out the Blue Community Schools program. Share it with your local schools. Start the conversation. Who knows? The next Blue Community School could be right here in New Brunswick.
